A Piece of Candy
A Piece of Candy The mirror showed a reflection that was not my own. I took a step back, startled by what I was seeing, but not confused. I felt my brain register the visual. Processing it like someone trying to process a memory from long ago that had been triggered by an aroma. As I processed the image, the mirror expanded. No, not expanded. Multiplied on itself. I saw fire. I took another step back, but I didn’t take my eyes off the mirror. The mirror multiplied again. The fire dilated, it spread from the first mirror to the second mirror. A feeling of intrigue came over me. Curiosity even. What exactly was I seeing? Yes, it was a mirror, and it was fire within it, but why?

A Change of Heart
I am officially a drop out, and I’m in love and proud of it! The day I walked out of Morgan State University was one of the best days of my life. Followed by many, many, many bad days that I had no idea would come. The sun was shining so bright. It was a hot June day back in 2007, and I was in love. Oh, the lies love tells us. The lies love had told me. I stood outside the electrical engineering building full of hope and relief. No more homework assignments to do. No more late nights. No more early mornings, and that was alright with me. I began walking across the steaming parking lot to my red SUV. As I lightly skipped there a classmate called my name. It was Ifeanyi, my dear college friend. He approached me with a smile on his face. “What up Ify?”, I said playfully. “Nothing much, where you are going, don’t we have class?” “You sure do”, I replied. He cut his eye at me and walked past. “Skipping class again Dawn?”. “I sure am, see you at the party!”. I watched him go in the building as I made my way to my vehicle. I never saw Ifeanyi again.

Forever My Funny Friend
October 31 ,1997 Kristen and I are best friends. Tonight, its Halloween and we stare in the mirror at one another. Giggling like the schoolgirls that we are, we dress as clowns. Twin clowns at that. We have on these frilly white hot pink dresses that have silk overlays. We are wearing white stockings and churchy black dress shoes that we glued hot pink bows on. We have put our hair in pigtails. We painted our faces white and used pink lipstick to make exaggerated smiles. Because of our age, we are allowed to go trick or treating without parent supervision as long as we both promised to be at our respective homes by midnight. We are neighbors too.
