Remembering Raymond
September is Suicide Awareness Month, and today is the birthday of a dear one who lost his life to suicide. Below is my remembrance of him, written on the second birthday after his death; it's now been eight years since he left us and it's still unimaginable.

On loss, fear, teeth, and flowers

When a game's more than a game
My daughter recently turned 18 and is on the eve of her 10-year-anniversary of being diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes. She was just 8-years-old when her (and our family's world) was turned upside down, and it's hard to believe that she's lived now with the disease longer than she hasn't.

My childhood memories are tinged in shades of black and white. Although various relatives and friends used their Kodak and Polaroid cameras to capture in vivid color many of the moments from the late 1970s and early 1980s, when my father got behind the lens they were recorded in black and white or sepia tones.

Dirt, Debutantes, and Feminine Expectations
I still vividly remember the conversation I eavesdropped on a few years ago from the stands of a youth softball field. It had to be the most “This is so Southern” and also “Am I in the Twilight Zone?” conversation ever.
