Pawfully Ever After
Skye joined our family on July 3rd, 2015, when my husband called to say he had a surprise for us. Our four children buzzed with excitement. They assumed puppy, and I foolishly guessed cat. I’ll never live that one down. He pulled up with a massive grin on his face. On his lap was a tiny grey puppy of cuteness. I’ll never forget that Skye locked eyes with me as soon as I came up to the window. She was small, the runt of the litter, and the cutest puppy I had ever seen.

The story of Thea Nightwood
Distant lightning forked the sky as Thea Nightwood sat on her porch. Thunder jolted her old, tired bones as she sipped tea and rocked. She thought lovingly of her husband, Martin, who had designed and built this home for her many years before. At 93, Thea wanted to walk into the embrace of death. Her children had successful lives, and her grandchildren were all adults. As a barn owl swooped past her and landed in one rafter of her porch, Thea could feel the pain fleeing her body as she closed her eyes.

40 Days After
Serena’s singing a popular eighties song while sweeping the floor for the second time of the day. The broom’s swish against the bunker’s concrete floors relaxed her in a way it hadn’t before aliens invaded. Ben’s seated at what she calls his nerd station, fixing a radio that’s emitting the annoying drone of static. At the la-la part of the sing, she pumps up the volume, dancing with the broom.
