Love is Color Blind Until it Isn’t
When our daughter wanted to bring her boyfriend to Christmas dinner at my father’s, we all wondered how that would play out. Dad was born in 1934 and raised with strong beliefs. For instance, when I married, he expected my new family to remain members of the Lutheran church and grandchildren to be baptized; these were non-negotiable to keep him happy. Since my beliefs aligned with his, not a problem.

Five Values Shape Responsible, Empathetic People
My youth, like everyone’s, had difficulties. Life is not perfect. However, my parents lived according to five values that shaped who I am today. Daily five values were modeled in every aspect, every environment I encountered. They are the same five values I attempt to model: security, work ethic, discipline, respect, and education.

Strategies that Allow You to Remain the Adult in the Room

As we practiced them with our daughter at home, we knew they were working when she raised her voice to rant, "I hate it when you take those classes!" and proceeded to stomp out of the room.

I Understood the Saying: What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas
The week before the Las Vegas strip closed down, my husband and I visited. The last time we visited Vegas, 10 years ago, we saw the billboards that caused me to blush, attended shows with scantily clad females and carried a colorful drink down the strip. But our recent 2020 vacation offered new and unexpected stimulation for the senses, so many they will remain engraved on my senses until the quarantine lifts.

Once Upon a Time, I Publicly Proclaimed Teaching to be the Ideal Job, But . . .
I watch the national news to observe events unfold in other places feeling safely cocooned living in our small isolated town, Kuna, Idaho. However, the violence in the news is beginning to impact my life, the life of my children, and my community.

Turning Life’s Struggles into Positives
Life events bring out the best in people and sometimes during busy, stressful times or simply in the course of an average day, people’s efforts, the everyday actions of getting through a day, remain unnoticed. Why? Because we are trying to survive.

Laughter Makes the Tough Times Tolerable
My parents found humor in every situation — even events most people considered not so funny. Together they filled the room with laughter. When Dad lost Mom his heart shrunk one size, but he knew she would want the laughter to continue.
