My First Piece Was a Sonnet
My first piece of writing was a poem that was lost long ago along with my early innocence. My first memorable piece, which is still with me a few decades later, was a sonnet (The Yellow Afternoons of October) in honour of Sigmund Freud, who I was reading (studying) at the same time that I was learning Shakespeare. What joy and sadness from both! They are still two of my favourite writers. I received a BA in English and a BA in psychology, although the latter was not as rewarding as the former, since Freud was being brazenly bashed, mostly by individuals in denial. Interestingly, my favourite course ever, and I have close to twenty years of graduate studies, was titled Freud and Literature. Those were the days, and nights.

Do It Scared
I believe it was the winter of 2006 when I logged on to the family computer. It was a big hunk of a thing and sat on a wooden desk in what was aptly named the computer room. There were other things in there besides the computer – the ironing board, boxes upon boxes of old family videos, and the overall miscellaneous junk that tends to get accumulated over time that doesn’t have anywhere else to go. But it’s the computer room, because that’s the main purpose of it.

So, You’re Ready to Write a Sex Scene
Whether you pen fiction or essays, eventually your human characters are going to want to have sex. While coupling is an instinct to ensure a species survives, for humans, it’s far more, mostly because our brains are the largest sex organ we possess. Sex can be existential if we procreate to leave something of ourselves behind when we die. It can feel sinful, nasty, embarrassing, terrifying, pleasant, loving, unifying, and downright like the best thing ever invented. So, why is it so difficult to put it down on paper?

AI and it's Art
I am the first to admit that I am oblivious to a lot of what is happening on Vocal. There is a lot to keep up with. I did ask to be made to feel warm and fuzzy, but now I feel like I if I am not careful, I will internally and externally combust. Things have certainly heated up on the platform.

Please Tell Me Why. Runner-Up in Writers Challenge.
It's funny what you remember about things like your earliest pieces of writing. For instance, I know one of the earliest pieces I ever wrote was a poem. It may not have been my first, but it was one of the most impactful. But the impact didn't come from the writing or the content itself, but from the lessons I would learn from the reaction to it.

The Most Difficult Thing About Writing For Me.
Over the years, I have had more than just a little difficulty with writing. I have preferred to read. I love to read. When I told my brother that is 18 months younger that I had started to write, he said it didn't surprise him as I had quite the imagination when we were young.

Why Every Word Matters
Have you ever thought that writing is useless and perhaps even questioned its significance in the grand scheme of things? But as soon as the thought forms in your mind, you suddenly feel guilty, and this deep sense of shame washes over you. It's as though your heart protests, defending this ancient art. You feel horrible calling yourself a writer, as if you committed an unthinkable sin by thinking negatively about writing. We ponder and often wonder, but why do we attach so much importance to something that, at its core, is just a tool?
