Have you ever thought that writing is useless and perhaps even questioned its significance in the grand scheme of things? But as soon as the thought forms in your mind, you suddenly feel guilty, and this deep sense of shame washes over you. It's as though your heart protests, defending this ancient art. You feel horrible calling yourself a writer, as if you committed an unthinkable sin by thinking negatively about writing. We ponder and often wonder, but why do we attach so much importance to something that, at its core, is just a tool?

Writing is more than just a tool.

A pencil, whether sharp or dull, can be used for drawing or for taking notes; it’s still a pencil either way. Just like this simple tool, the same principle applies to words. The same goes for words on paper. Whether they are meticulously chosen or spontaneous, they can be used to communicate an idea or story, or they can simply be written down without any purpose whatsoever, merely reflecting a momentary thought.

Sometimes we get frustrated with our writing, especially when the words don't flow as we'd like. We might even stare at the blank page, feeling the weight of expectations. We start to doubt ourselves and our abilities. During these moments of vulnerability, we may entertain fleeting thoughts. We begin to think that maybe writing really isn’t all that important after all; maybe it’s just another thing at which we aren’t good.

The power of writing

But let me ask you this, amidst the hustle and bustle of our digital age: what would happen if everyone stopped writing?

Would the world stand still? Chances are that if no one ever put their thoughts down on paper or typed them out again, communication would probably break down. To say that human history, culture, and knowledge would unravel would be a stretch. Still, ideas would die out; innovation would cease because there would be no new ways of thinking without writers documenting them first.

Every word matters.

The world as we know it today, with its huge literature, news, and digital content, depends on writers.

To say that writers are the backbone of our society wouldn’t be far from the truth. They are the ones who create stories, share ideas, and communicate with the world through their words. And most importantly, they provide context for our shared experiences. Without them, we would be lost in a sea of confusion and misunderstanding.

Everything that is written, whether articles, novels, or poems, is a tribute to the power of the writer. Writers help us understand each other; they see things from different perspectives. Through their words, they are able to bridge cultural and generational gaps, bringing the past into the present while opening up a window to the endless possibilities of the future. They give us hope by sharing their dreams and aspirations for a better future, shaping our collective consciousness.

Writers are also responsible for documenting history, a crucial task in the chronicles of human civilization. They keep alive the memories of people, places, and events. These stories, sometimes heartfelt and other times cautionary, act as a mirror for society. By sharing these stories, writers not only take us into the past but also help us to learn from our mistakes and celebrate our successes. Their words become a guide, ensuring that future generations understand their heritage and legacy.

Yes, writing can be frustrating at times, especially when faced with writer's block or critical feedback. However, it's definite that the power of the pen is unparalleled, and you as a writer are invaluable. The world as we know it today depends on writers, not just for entertainment but also for progress and communication. Writers, journalists, and thinkers pen their insights, discoveries, and innovations, shaping our collective future. Without them, society would crumble.

Thanks for this article. It was indeed a reminder of some of the best things about writing. What is good, the challenges, as well as what is not so good.
