An unofficial (bullshit) Summer challenge. You have two weeks, dear scribblers. Unearth your pen and have at it!

An unofficial bullshit Summer challenge for July 2024. (That is, an unofficial "bullshit summer" challenge, not an "unofficial bullshit" summer challenge. I think.) Either way, you have two weeks. Dig deep into the crevices (stop) of your sofa for your pen, and into your heart and soul for... something else.

The Prompt

You can probably guess from the title that the prompt is a quote, so here it comes. Buckle up, buttercup:

I’ve lost my faith in the summer time , Cos it don’t stop raining

- The Importance of Being Idle, Oasis, 2005

There it is, chaps. A prompt inspired by the great (typical) British summer, a wildly over-played band in the nineties (don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger), and a spot of Rhys Ifans. What's not to love? (You may recognise him from such stuff as: Notting Hill, Kevin and Perry Go Large, and House of the Dragon.)

It's a Saturday halfway through July, so it's summertime here in the UK. You would never know it by looking out of the window. This is wet even by our standards. In light of that, this prompt/quote seems especially apt. I hope you have fun with it.

Feel free to enjoy the song for a bit more inspiration. I'm pretty sure Ifans wears a top hat in the video, so there's that. What more do you need? Everyone loves top hats. (He does wear other clothes as well. Rest assured this is not a Tom Jones/Full Monty situation. Although maybe more of you would watch it if it was. Who knows. Filth.)

Them's the rules

  • Word count: Surprise, surprise, this is a microfiction challenge! 300-600 words. (The minimum count for the Fiction community is 600, so if you're under that you will probably need an author's note to bring it up. I always read the author's note! I love getting a peak behind the curtain at what goes into your stories.)
  • Prize: I'll tip my favourites a dollar each.
  • Winners: If there's only a few entries, I'll just pick one or two people. If there's more than 10, I'll pick 3. If there's more than 20, I'll pick 5. If it's much more than that, my head might explode, but please don't let that stop you!
  • Content: You don't have to include the lines in your story. It should be inspired by them, though, and the link should be clear. Rain, losing faith, etc. etc. etc. You can take other lines as well if you want, clever clogs, but not instead of this one.
  • Closing date: 11:59PM GMT, Saturday 28th July 2024

The Plan

I've got a few quotes lined up so I can do this again. Hopefully over the "summer" when I have more time for writing, and also for reading what you lovely lot come up with.

Get scribbling you spectacular sons of mothers!

Please leave me a link to your story in the comment section under this piece, and please do link back to me in your story as well!

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Thank you for reading!

If you're following my story every day nonsense, this one doesn't count, since it's not fiction and it's over the word count. I'll be posting my microfiction piece later today, please look out for it.

In the meantime, if you'd prefer a fiction piece, try this one: Something Crawled Up Your- -

Or this one (one of my favourites I've done lately): Jerry's Bad Fur Day
