Some of you might think that there’s nothing to traveling across the country. But because of airline regulations and strict security measures, there’s a lot more to planning a domestic trip. If you want to simplify your next trip, then try out some of our domestic travel hacks. You won’t be sorry.

Book in Advance—Especially Holidays

Last minute deals are awfully rare and take advantage of those who need to book last minute. It’s wise to book in advance by 6-12 weeks to save a bit of money. If you’re planning to travel during the holidays, we recommend you book up to a year in advance. This is simply because thousands of people will be traveling to visit their families. Book a red-eye flight if you must travel last minute. Often times they're cheaper and the airport is less chaotic early in the morning or late at night.

Pack Smartly

Instead of buying food on the flight, fill a Ziploc bag with oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nuts and dried fruit. Once your stomach is grumbling ask your flight attendant for a mug and hot water. Oatmeal will keep your satiated and nourished. Peppermint essential oil is a must for nausea, migraines, and to freshen your breath. Bring collapsible laundry bags keep your dirty clothes separated from your clean ones. Waterproof versions are available for after swimming. Instead of folding your clothes, roll them up into a little tube. This saves space and reduces wrinkles and creases. Bring all your appropriate IDs and double check all the information is the same.

Carry-On Only

If you don't need a lot of luggage, consider saving time and money by only bringing carry-on luggage. This will save time as you won’t have to wait in line to claim your luggage. Plus you won’t have to worry it getting stolen or lost. Some airlines charge a fee, even if it’s below the weight limit. Before you begin packing be sure to check the size/weight restrictions, though. If you do bring luggage—label it as fragile. This will avoid unnecessary banging around.

Prepare for Security Check

Studies show most people follow their dominant hand and go right at security checks. Instead, go left to avoid a longer line. While waiting in the inevitable line, empty your pockets of any keys, loose change, and your phone. This will ensure you get through the check quickly and save other people time too. Bring a few empty Ziploc bags for liquids, snacks, or to keep your phone dry.

Flying with Children

Children can get restless and irritated when sitting in the same spot for hours. Bring plenty of their favorite snacks. This is particularly important if they’re picky eaters and you have a feeling they’re not going to like airplane food. Bring a portable DVD player, a laptop with downloaded movies, books, or download a drawing app on your phone or iPad.

Even when traveling domestically it can be stressful when things don’t go as planned. We hope these hacks will help you on your next trip. Enjoy your journey!
