The front desk checks and says there is a south-facing king room on the fifth floor, unsold tonight. You can switch, no extra charge.

The Three-Hour Hourly Room At three in the afternoon, the hotel lobby is next to the high-speed rail station. The LED screen scrolls: Hourly room, three hours, from 68 yuan. A man in a gray jacket hands over his ID, backpack at his feet. The front desk swipes the ID, registers him, and hands him a key card. The elevator goes up to the seventh floor. At the end of the hallway, a linen cart blocks half the way. He swipes the card and enters. The curtains are drawn. The sheets are flat. The air-conditioning vent hums low.

If you’re forced, and how utterly terrible must it be if you’re forced to take only a 24 hour vacation, the only choice is to chase rainbows in Dublin, that lynchpin of the Emerald Isle with some of the cheapest flights from Chicago to Europe. As it’s been sung, you can go around the world, from Antarctica to Katmandu, and find an Irish pub—a place you’ll be welcomed with a kind smile and a cold pint. If you’re lucky, you might even get some fiddle, and if you’re really lucky they’ll be some black pudding (okay that one is personal taste).
