On day one of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, 16 sprinters lined up for a chance to compete in the final round of the 60 meters. Half of them survived to go on for a chance to win an NCAA gold medal in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Heat one was won in a collegiate record time of 6.96 as Texas senior sprinter Julien Alfred blazed in a talented field of runners that included LSU junior Favour Ofili who followed her at 7.134 along with Clemson senior Kiara Grant's time of 7.139. Ofili finished seventh in last year's final, while Alfred placed fifth.

While Alfred hopes to capture the NCAA 60 meters crown tomorrow, she is familiar with winning national titles as she is the reigning 100 meters and 400-meter relay champ for the upcoming outdoor season.

Heat two was a closer affair as Tennessee junior Jacious Sears led the pack with a personal best time of 7.04. Georgia freshman Kaila Jackson's finish of 7.067 edged out Oregon's Jadyn Mays time of 7.070.

Ole Miss' McKenzie Long and Georgia's Autumn Wilson also qualified for the final at 7.10 and 7.12 in heat two. Here's a look at the full results:

1. Julien Alfred, Texas, 6.96

2. Jacious Sears, Miami, 7.04

3. Kaila Jackson, Georgia, 7.067

4. Jadyn Mays, Oregon, 7.070

5. McKenzie Long, Ole Miss, 7.10

6. Autumn Wilson, Georgia, 7.12

7. Favour Ofili, LSU, 7.134

8. Kiara Grant, Clemson, 7.139

9. Ezinne Abba, Texas, 7.15

10. Samirah Moody, USC, 7.15

11. Amira Young, Minnesota, 7.21

12. Rosemary Chukwuma, Texas Tech, 7.23

13. Kevona Davis, Texas, 7.24

14. Akilah Lewis, Minnesota, 7.26

15. Dajaz DeFrand, Florida State, 7.27

16. Jayla Jamison, South Carolina 7.27

In the final Alfred, winner of two of the last three Big 12 60 meters championships, will do her best to hold off Sears who is this year's SEC champ and last year's ACC champ, when she sprinted for Miami. Georgia's Jackson has yet to record anything less than a top two finish in her freshman campaign. She was runner-up to Sears in the SEC final.

Mays of Oregon has the fastest feet of the west as she looks to better her bronze medal finish last season. Ole Miss sprinter, Long maybe considered a surprise competitor in this competition. She finished in the top five at the SEC final and prior to the NCAA prelims, Long's top time was 7.22. Her 7.10 finish shows that she has a legitimate shot for a medal. This was just her second 60 meters championship final as her first was at this year's SEC meet.

Georgia freshman Wilson has yet to win a 60 meters race as a collegiate athlete but she has recorded sub 7.25 finishes on six occasions this season. No time better the NCAA prelim round where she ran 7.12.

After an All-American career at Norfolk State, Grant began her time at Clemson last year during outdoor season. This year she appeared in her first ACC indoor meet and the Jamaican born sprinter took home the gold in the 60 meters final.
