Recap of Track & Field in 2022
As the college track and field season has come to a close, we will take time to take a look at women in the sport who competed and made things happen in 2022.
Jasmin Reed - Oregon
A native of Carson, California, Jasmin Reed closed her career at Oregon on the grand stage of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Reed was on the foursome that won the bronze medal in the 400-meter relay at 42.59. Almost one month before she scored her final gold medal in the 400-meter relay at the PAC-12 Track & Field Championships as Oregon won the overall team conference crown. That performance made her a back-to-back champion in that event. Reed made her NCAA championship meet debut as a freshman. She won a silver medal in 2018 on the runner-up 400-meter relay squad that was also second at the PAC-12 Track & Field Championships that season.
Paula Salmon - North Carolina A&T
Paula Salmon has become one of the best athletes to ever perform at North Carolina A&T. The Brooklyn, New York native began her All-American career placing third in the high jump at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2019. Later that year she grabbed two silvers in the 400-meter hurdles and high jump along with a bronze in the 100-meter hurdles at the MEAC outdoor meet. In 2020, Salmon won her first championship by winning the high jump at the indoor MEAC meet and she won the silver medal in the 60-meter hurdles. In 2021 Salmon got her first taste of the NCAA championships meet when she qualified and competed in the 100-meter hurdles. Prior to that she won silver medals in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump in her final appearance at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In 2022 her program competed in the Big South and Salmon won the 100-meter hurdles before placing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Catherine Leger - UCLA
UCLA's Catherine Leger is a native of Montreal, Quebec in Canada. She won her first PAC-12 championship this season as a fourth of the 1,600-meter relay. Leger also snatched a bronze medal in the 400-meter relay and she helped her team qualify for the NCAA championships in both relay races. Now an All-American, her first collegiate medal came at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships where she was on the silver medal 1,600-meter relay team in 2020. Her first outdoor PAC-12 medals came in the 2021 season when she was on the runner-up team in the 1,600-meter relay and the third-place squad in the 400-meter relay.
Chante Clinkscale - Dayton
Chante Clinkscale had a dominant freshman season for the Dayton Flyers. Clinkscale, a native of Warren, Ohio won each of her seven open finals during the indoor season. She kicked off her career with a win in the 60 meters at 7.43 at the Jim Green Track & Field Invitational, hosted by Kentucky. Her indoor season closed at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships where she won the 60 meters at 7.33 and the 200 meters at 24.27. Clinkscale carried her success to the outdoor season taking gold in the 100 meters (11.52), 200 meters (23.95) and 400-meter relay (47.43). She qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary where she competed in the 100 meters.
Darci Khan - Kentucky
As she is headed to Howard, Darci Khan started her first three seasons at Kentucky. Khan scored a top three finish in her first 60-meter hurdles final at the 2019 Jingle Bells Open hosted by Kentucky. In that race she placed ahead of future Kentucky All-American hurdler Masai Russell who was in her second season. Khan, a native of Stockbridge, Georgia, opened this past season with a second-place finish at the Louisville Cardinal Classic. Khan scored a third-place result at this year's Drake Relays in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished her season competing at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
