Just break the plate
I was about three, and I broke a plate. It wasn’t accidental; I did it on purpose. I grew up in the eighties, where TV became the absent minded babysitter of the young, and I guess it still is, in a more small and compact way. On that great tube, they used to have a real tube back in the day, not this flat stuff around now; I saw many things, most of which I don’t remember. One thing must have played a bunch, because it got stuck in my head. The thought must have rattled around in my head for what seems like forever to a three-year-old, though I honestly have no clue how long it lay festering. What I know is that on a sunny day, I decided it was time to test my hypothesis. Clad in nothing but a diaper, I found the testing implement, a large claw hammer.

The term comfort character is defined by Urban Dictionary as “a character, which can be from a TV show, game, book, etc, [who] makes you feel safe and happy when upset, sad, down, etc.” Having grown up isolated and ostracized by my community, I learned from an early age to find the companionship I lacked in works of fiction. I’ve had a number of comfort characters in my life, but the one that stands out is Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities. That character kept coming back into my life at times when I needed comfort most, and that started at a young age.

Night was descending as the metro lurched to a halt. I gathered the last of my energy, grabbed my heavy bag, and stepped off the sweaty carriage, away from the hot and sticky breath of a hundred strangers and into the cool evening air. It washed over me like a gentle wave as I spotted my boyfriend heading towards me. I smiled, but he did not return it. He never smiled upon meeting. It was a curious habit that irked me on normal days, but irritated me immensely that day after the hellish journey I had just endured.
