I think that is partially due to feeling wasteful because they don't know how to get the most out of it. But whole chickens are a great way to get higher quality chicken on your table for a good price. Now, pasture-raised chickens are probably the highest quality you can find, but they average around $16 to $20 each, from what I've seen. The next best would be free-range/organic and that will easily cut your costs.
