Shame & Fear
By Darryl James Shame on the selfish who hoard, because they hurt the elderly and the infirm and the poor by overindulging their fear and greed and selfishness.
Can You Please Address The Racism?
Dear Mr. President, I am very concerned that as COVID-19 becomes more of a pandemic in this country, it will serve to fuel the already-present pandemic of racism that has swept our nation for years now. I fear the words you use when you refer to this virus as "the Chinese virus." Mr. President, viruses do not have an ethnicity. But people do. And your speech links this virus to people of Chinese descent (and really, all Asians worldwide). In fact, you normalize the fear of individuals who are as American as you or I by categorizing a virus as being "Chinese."
Elizabeth TebbPublished 4 years ago in The SwampRacism will Not Solve this
Racism has been reborn because of the coronavirus how it is at risk of getting normalized and the danger it presents to Asian Americans. The dangerous ways Americans have reacted to the coronavirus out of fear. In Americans' fearful reaction to the risk of getting the virus their way of self-preservation, they do not preserve Asian Americans just found an excuse to be racist. The mistake in Wuhan has a long-lasting impact on the Chinese community around the world.
TechNOGeek ReviewsPublished 4 years ago in The SwampShould We Provide Emergency Universal Basic Income to Everyone or Just Those Who Need It?
What’s happened in just the past few days with mind-boggling speed is the near certainty now that in the very near future, the United States is going to start cutting checks for some as yet undefined value and sending them to an as yet undefined population. As an advocate for a universal basic income since 2013, I applaud this growing "cash bailout of the people" consensus, however I would like to emphasize that what matters most right now as with UBI in general, is the unconditionality/universality of the payment. In other words, the checks really need to go to everyone, excluding no one, and where that may seem wasteful or unnecessary, let me explain why it should be part of any bill that gets enacted into law for emergency UBI or permanent UBI.

While the current trade war between Donald Trump and China keeps making the news. There’s another trade war guided by Thomas Jefferson we never heard about. That one led to protectionist pricing and massive exportation of what became Virginia’s greatest export, not tobacco but slaves.

There is a story told about Ella Sheppard, the matriarch of the Fisk University Jubilee Singers, where her mother, distraught that her owner wouldn’t allow Ella to be sold to her father; was ready to drown 3-year-old Ella that she might know freedom of another kind. In some stories, it was “Mammy Vinny” who cried out and stopped Sarah from killing her child; in another version, “Aunt Cherry” intervened, saying; “God’s got great work for this baby to do. She’s going to stand before Kings and Queens.”

In 1808, America banned the import of slaves from Africa and the West Indies. The impact on actual slavery in America was almost non-existent. There was still some limited smuggling of slaves but the majority of new slaves in America came from what Professor Eric Foner called, “natural increase.” One could reasonably ask, “Why ban slave imports and not slavery itself?” The answer is because, for many of the proponents of the prohibition including Thomas Jefferson, the reason was not based on humanitarian concerns but on economics. The South was producing and selling enough slaves internally that the slave trade was reducing prices for slaves and cutting into profits.

I argue on the Internet with what I'll lump together and call Republicans. Most of them are indeed registered Republicans although some prefer only to be called Conservative or Libertarian. As far as I know, I'm the only black regular among the group but being the Internet, you can't say for sure.

Commentary Trump just cannot help himself. He appears to be hard-wired to default to his white supremacist/white racist history and mentality every single time adversity strikes.

A few months ago the United States had a bustling economy with a record setting stock market. Today, all the gains from the last three years are gone, and most of the nation is practicing social distancing. Schools, restaurants, and non-essential businesses have closed their doors and we face a global recession.
