Douglas Emhof has made American history without even trying. He is married to Kamala Harris who is the Vice President-elect now that it is official that Joe Biden has won the 2020 presidential election. Harris will be the first female as well as the first woman of color to hold the VP office. Her father is black and from British Jamacia and her mother was Indian from Southeastern Asia. Emhof will be the first gentleman whose wife is the Vice-President and also an American with non-European and non-African slavery heritage. Emhof is also the product of two Jewish parents.

He was born to Jewish parents, Michael and Barbara Emhoff, in Brooklyn, New York. He has one brother, Andy, and one sister, Jamie. Emhof has a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Northridge and his Juris Doctor comes from the USC Gould School of Law. The soon to be "second man" is an entertainment litigator who opened his own firm with Ben Whitwell in 2000. In 2006 the firm was acquired by Venable and Emhoff became the managing director of the company's West Coast offices. In 2017 he became a partner with DLA Piper but took a leave of absence once his wife became Joe Biden's running mate.

Douglas Emhoff has played an important role in campaigning for Joe Biden along with his spouse and it is truly a family affair. Emhoff was married to his first wife Kerstin Macklin Emhoff for 16 years and they have two children, a son, Cole, and a daughter, Emma. Kamala has stated that she loves her stepchildren and they all get along. She says Emma and Cole refer to her as "Mamala." The Vice President-elect also has a great relationship with her husband's ex-wife who actually worked on her initial campaign to run for president.

The second gentleman and vice president-elect met when a client of Emhoff's and a friend of Kamala's set them up in 2013. Prior to their date, Emhoff called and left Harris a long voicemail that she replays to him each year on their anniversaries. The couple was married on August 22, 2014, and Kamala's sister Maya officiated the ceremony. Emhoff is not shy about speaking out regarding his Jewish heritage and commitment. He embraced a central theme of Joe Biden's campaign by saying: "Trump is unfit to be president in part because he coddles right-wing extremists".

He also does pro bono work with Bet Tzedek, which provides free legal services for the poor. Emhoff also has been quoted as stating: “We have a president, right now, who has repeatedly used anti-Semitic dog whistles,” “But worst of all, when marchers in Charlottesville came out of the woods, carrying torches and spewing the same anti-Semitic vile that we heard in the 1930s in Germany, before the Holocaust, this president called some of them ‘very fine people."

There was a time in America when 43 presidents were white males, with Caucasian wives. The election of Barak Obama in 2008 and again in 2012 gave the nation the first president of mixed-race heritage. Obama's father was from Kenya and his mother from Hawaii. His wife Michelle became the first African American first lady in the nation. When Joe Biden and his wife Jill are sworn in as the president and first lady they will again be a Caucasian couple in the Oval Office. They bring with them however Kamala Harris and Douglas Emhoff, who together represent a melting pot from Southeastern Asia/India, Jamaica and the Jewish community. The bottom line is that all four are Americans and the diversity is what makes this nation so great.
