Often people with anxiety or depression are afraid to talk about the feelings and thoughts they are having.

Here are some ways to deal with anxiety and depression.

1. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you trust.

Some people with anxiety or depression are afraid to talk about the feelings and thoughts they are having. Because they have bad thoughts they may think that they are bad people. Bottling these thoughts up will become too much. These thoughts are normal. Do not fight them. Accept them. They will not go away but with time they will fade. Good people who have bad thoughts are disturbed by them but are unlikely to act on them. Bad people who have bad thoughts are not ashamed of them and are likely to act on them. Remember the difference. If you do not feel you are ready to talk, don’t feel pressured to. You may find that by telling lots of people, it is on your mind. Do what you feel is best.

2. Remember you are not alone.

When you suffer from anxiety or depression, it can feel like you are the only one who is feeling how you are feeling. Many people with these conditions may not be aware that they have them or do not want to talk about it. People who suffer from anxiety or depression may worry that they are not normal. What is normal? Every person is unique. Our definitions of things are always changing.

3. Get active outside.

If it is just a ten minute walk it will make a difference. Fresh air and vitamin D improve well-being. Exercise produces feel good chemicals called endorphins. You will feel energised. I recommend walking, running, gardening, and cycling. Do indoor exercise by all means, but getting outdoors is important. Even if it is drizzling, it is not as bad as it looks. Walks like that can be refreshing. The same can be said for winter when it is dark and cold. Winter can be beautiful with sparkling frosts, crisp air, white skies, holly berries, and robins. If you don’t have time to get out when it is light, then go in the evening. I find that runs and walks in the dark can be different and exciting.

4. Eat a healthy diet.

Eat foods that release energy slowly such as whole wheat bread and pasta. Eat protein such as fish or chicken. Sugary foods may boost your energy for a short while, but your energy levels will drop down quickly. Get vitamins from fruit and vegetables. An alcoholic drink can relax you, but too many can act as a depressive.

5. Volunteer or join a club.

This will boost your confidence and skills. It is a great way to meet new people. It will take your mind off worries and make you feel good.

6. Do what you love.

It will remind you of who you are and what you do best.

7. Get a good night’s sleep.

Avoid screens and caffeine before bed, as these will keep you awake. Have a hot bath before bed or drink hot chocolate. Put on soothing music. Read. Whatever helps you unwind.

8. Read self-help books.

I would recommend Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig and Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. They remind you that you are not alone and change your way of thinking.

9. Color.

Adult coloring books are proven to help with mental health problems and improve creativity.

10. Hypnosis

This will relax the mind. It is difficult to stress when you listen to these.

11. Write.

A great way to express your thoughts and feelings. It feels like a weight is lifted.
