The ways that the show "mom" tackles the topic of addiction

Let's look at it

If you haven't seen the show mom I recommend it. Basically it's about a mother daughter duo and their group of friends who are dealing with life and trying to get (and stay) sober. It is a comedy that sometimes deals with tough topics. I recently realize that it tells the different types of sobriety. Let me explain this in this post.

Let's start with Christy. Christy's sobriety has been one of the most steady of the group. In her journey she has helped a few people in their journeys. The thing about Christy is that she and her mama have a complicated relationship. In the beginning of the series they reconnected and were repairing their relationship. Christy's issue was that she struggled with other addictions like smoking and gambling. She also struggled with forgiving her mother. The other relationships in her life were struggles like the relationship with her kids. She did chase her dreams and got her law degree. She shows that it is ok to stumble in some ways.

Bonnie is interesting. She is Christy's mother. Bonnie briefly had another addiction which was tattoos. Unlike her daughter Bonnie had a relapse into drugs. She only briefly used drugs when she relapsed. She also did get married. She did show that you can have a 2nd chance and do good.

Marjorie is the old wise woman of the group. She had gotten arrested and was homeless in her past. She hasn't relapsed but she has helped a lot of people in her journey. She sponsors all or most of the main of the group. She lost her husband to complications of a stroke. She shows that you can stay sober.

Wendy is the emotional one. She became a nurse during her drinking and drugging days. She wanted to do so to get her hands on drugs. Wendy does stay sober and still works as a nurse. What she teaches us is that if you work really hard you can stay sober.

Next is Jill the rich lady of the group. She went through a divorce because of her addiction. She kept relapsing and going to really nice rehabs. The group keeps supporting her through her journey. What we learn from her is no matter how many times you fall you can get back up.

Jodi is a young woman that was only in a few episodes. Her story was vey powerful. Jodi was someone who came in to AA wanting to get clean. She had a boyfriend that was into drugs. There was scene early on in her story line where she was trying to get clean and was beaten up for it. Then when she was doing pretty good there was a problem. She overdosed and died. The women in the group loved her. What we learn from her is that if you have someone that is not clean or a good influence in your life then they can ruin anything good for you.

They also have other girls like Natasha, Nora, Regina and Tammy. They have smaller roles in the story of the group. Natasha was connected to the group because Jill was the foster mom to Natasha's daughter. When she was introduced to the group Natasha was in rehab to get clean and Christy was her sponsor. She did get her daughter back to Jill's dismay. Nora is Christy's sponsor after her and Marjorie had a fight. Nora isn't the best friends with the person you sponsor kind of person. Regina was about to dip out on her first meeting when Christy caught up with her and invited her out to coffee and then to her house. She was working the program in and out of jail. Tammy is the newest member of the group. She was in jail when she recognized Bonnie and attacked her. She has been working the program but doesn't talk much about her drinking and drugging days.

I hope you enjoyed this look into this show. I hope to do more posts about things that matter.
