Lena peered into the mirror, but all she could see was the wall behind her. It was as if the mirror was nothing but a frame, devoid of any reflective properties. She rubbed her eyes and looked again, but the result was the same. Lena wondered whether the mirror was small or she was exceptionally tall. She checked the height and realized that there was nothing unusual about the setup.
Lena was a curious girl, and the absence of the reflection piqued her interest. She tapped the glass surface, reaching out to feel its texture. The surface was cool and smooth, with no imperfections or scratches. She tried looking into the mirror from different angles, hoping to catch a glimpse of her image, but all she could see was the surrounding.
It had been a while since Lena had used the mirror. She had been living alone in her small apartment for years, and she had always felt that her conventional appearance was nothing special. Lena had never been a fan of mirrors anyway. Her mother, who had a love for antiques, had brought the mirror with her when she moved in. Lena used to play dress-up as a child and had a fond memory of feeling like an adult in the mirror's reflection. However, that was ages ago, and her interest in such things had waned.
Lena sat down on the bed and stared at the mirror. The absence of a reflection was mysterious, and Lena was determined to solve the riddle. She took out her makeup kit and started forcefully applying a generous amount of lipstick, hoping to leave a mark. But no matter how hard she tried, the surface remained unblemished.
Frustrated, Lena jumped off the bed and started pacing. She tried to think of every explanation, but nothing seemed to fit. The idea of the mirror being cursed was the only one that came from her head.
At night, Lena dreamt of the reflection-less mirror. In her dream, she was transported to a different reality. There was no art on the wall, no furniture, and no fixtures. The room was a complete void. But the mirror hung, floating in mid-air, in the center of it all. Lena had a nagging feeling that the mirror had some connection to the strange reality. Upon closer inspection, she realized that the surface of the mirror had a wavy texture. As she moved closer, she saw that the ripples formed an inscription.
“Your fate is forever bound,
In the mirror that can't reflect,
You'll stay forever found,
In the space where you neglect.
To see the truth that's bound,
In what you should not expect.”
In her dream, Lena tried to touch the inscription, but before her fingers could make contact, she woke up with a start.
The next day, Lena woke up feeling more determined than ever. She had spent the whole night researching mirrors online and had even called a university researcher. His response was blunt- he had never heard of such a phenomenon. Lena had even emailed several journalists, but none had responded so far.
After a long day of fruitless efforts, Lena slumped in her chair, exhausted. She paused and looked up at the mirror. Slowly, she walked toward it, taking one step at a time, heart racing. She could feel her heart pounding. There was something different about the mirror this time. Lena could sense its energy- an energy that was both powerful and dark.
Lena stood barely inches away from the mirror, as she reached out to touch the glass. The moment her finger made contact, she experienced an almost unbearable electric shock. It felt as though every inch of her body was on fire.
Lena screamed as the room around her faded to black. She struggled to open her eyes but realized that she was blind. She sensed that something had indeed gone wrong- terribly, terribly wrong. Was she stuck forever in the mirror's space? What had she done to deserve this?
Lena felt a tear trickle down her cheek. She felt alone and helpless in the darkness, without any hope of recovery. All of her actions had led her to her worst fear – being alone with no one to come back to.
Who would know that this was the price of her curiosity? She had always moments when her curiosity got the better of her, but never like this. All the things that had defined Lena had been taken away, and now she was going to face the consequences of her actions. Either face them or find a way out. So Lena was willed to find a way out of the mirror, to leave its space and return to the reality she knew.
