In 2000, the Netherlands became the first country to accept same-sex marriage. In 2003, Belgium was the second country to pass this law.

Up to now, there have been 19 countries around the world legalizing same-sex marriage - including Argentina, Belgium, Portugal, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Finland, France, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay, and the United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland). Some US states and Mexico have also recognized same-sex marriage.
