Youthful Expectations

Losing a loved one, I felt lost, but found myself in poems, songs and dreams of old.

It's a hard pill to swallow,

When you're told to wake up to reality,

It's a bitter, unsweetened, slice of life,

That's peer-pressuring you to give up,

But you get used to it,

And life goes on,

That hard pill to swallow,

You hardly notice it anymore,

Bitter and unsweetened,

Come on, that's your bread and butter you eat every day,

Peer-pressure,

No,no, that's your friends helping you manage your expectations,

After all, humans and adaptability,

It's a survival mechanism that runs strong,

It's deeply rooted in our DNA,

But you know, us human beings are kinda like computers,

We have a bypass code that gives us the courage to take the risk,

Now obviously, you don't want to have your foot on the bypass code,

Like you're flooring the gas pedal of a car,

Use it when necessary and keep it to small bursts,

Like you're pumping the brake of a car to stop in the snow,

Why let yourself wallow in misery eternal,

When you can do what you love, sweep the world in inferno,

Of your passion, your genius, your talent, your skill,

Remember, there's no need to swallow that pill,

That thing about doors, one's closed, there's yours,

Believe it, it's real, there's a purpose in you,

If you've lived for a sufficient stretch of time,

You've learned and honed at least one skill,

Maybe more, I don't know, it depends on you,

Either forced by circumstance, or by your own choice,

Could be you had to grind your skill to the top,

Low talent, that's fine, just exchange it with time,

Physical movement, or the path of brain waves,

Just by living, you can't help but learn,

It's a survival mechanism that runs strong,

It's deeply rooted in our DNA,

If you don't learn to find a way to live,

You die, be dead, sleep ever more,

So, if you feel like you're stuck,

In a cycle with no luck,

Identify what you can do,

You don't have to be the best at whatever it is,

Just know that since you can do whatever,

There's a need for it out in the world,

Some way, some form, or in some capacity,

Figure that out and have no doubt,

Lightly tap that bypass code,

Grip the wheel and drive out on that road,

Where it goes, only you can find out,

It's your road, filled with youthful expectations,

And be glad you're likely not the best,

It's exciting to grow, reaching for the stars,

Maybe you'll pave a new path for the world,

Going off-road might make you want to hurl,

Yet, you'll never have the chance to see,

What you can be, if you never try.
