You Know and I Know

when the dawn breaks

when the moon quakes

when all you knew escapes

You know and

I know

.

when your heart bursts your ears

when your decisions are not your own

when you dance with the shadows

when your past mirrors your present

when you fuck to feel

when you sleep to forget

when you create to fake

when your desires consume the earth

when you lie to protect yourself

when the innocent are guilty

when all you knew escapes

You know and

I know

.

when you pretend to laugh

when you stay awake on porn

when you pray to the God you dont believe in

when you give up over and over

when you cheat

when you cant admit your wrong

when you go along with the crowd

when your lovers eyes are not the same

when your memories hold you hostage

when all you knew escapes

You know and

I know:

our greatest fear,

is eachother.

Bukowski's "We Will Defeat Death" was somewhat an influence over this piece. If you've never read that work, I'd recommend.

This was emotional and relatable and heart palpitating! It's taken a minute or two to really absorb the depth for which this runs for me... It feels very immersive for me!

My gosh, your last four lines hit me like a brick in the face. Everything preceding it living in those lines. Excellent piece.

  • I'm not sure that I know anything anymore, beyond the fact that I simply don't know. But I certainly do know the fear of the other--of not measuring up, being good enough, being worthy.

Raw, painful and just fantastic. Well done.

Amazing Dean. I think everyone will resonate with different parts of this for different reasons. This was my favorite: “when your desires consume the earth when you lie to protect yourself when the innocent are guilty” Such creative conveyance of what cognitive dissonance feels like are in these three lines. When your biggest fear is the darkest side of yourself, and the daily battles stem from the war that is internal. So good! 👏🏼

"When your lovers eyes are not the same" 😮 At that very moment, you know and I know that something isn't right. You nailed the moment!!! Great work!

That hit hard. Like a punch to the face that you see coming but don't move out of the way because you know you deserved it. Amazing, truly.

Brilliant response to the challenge. And a really masterfully wrought poem, powerful and full of pain. "when you fuck to feel when you sleep to forget when you create to fake when your desires consume the earth" Much applause.
