what for he fought
victory at the cost of what he sought to save

long after the war is over
a single lonely soldier rides home
his only companions are the chill and silence
while he considers many things
if the win was worth its price
what it means to be so estranged
and still, on his casual pilgrimage
this is the closest he has ever felt to peace
to the reasons he chose to sacrifice
to what he rode to battle to protect in the first place
he thought he knew what for he fought
but his confidence was lost in the chaos
collateral to the eventual victory
at the cost of what he sought to save
security bought with integrity
and the good conscience he once knew
afraid of that conflicted pitch
run off and away from the field
as it ran, he gave chase
the more he pursued, the farther it then flew
a refugee of freedom's call
from the stones we threw at the enemy
intent to shatter their glass homes
until we saw too late
the others stood outside those walls
looking in, to witness hubris
as peace on earth became a hollow truth.
