Walt Whitman (1819-1892, US) His work is said to have impacted Pablo Neruda and innumerable different greats who followed him. He is most popular for his sonnets that portray nature, love, and sexuality.

Whitman enormously respected Abraham Lincoln, on whose passing he expressed "O Skipper! My Skipper!" and "When Lilacs Rearward in the Dooryard Bloom'd."
