Before you lose yourself

Humanitarians online when injustice screams at us through text,

"How dare they", post shared, as we scroll to the next,

liking stories online while ignoring neighbors who suffer,

relating to memes more than we relate to each other.

The eyes of preteens, glued to the phone screen,

bombarded with filters and fairy tales and everything in between.

First steps of your baby witnessed through a lens,

immediately posted to Facebook for all of your friends.

Loneliness climbs, human interaction cast aside,

virtual personas built from which behind we hide,

algorithms designed to keep us infected,

a hot flush of panic when we get disconnected.

This addiction, this disease, this desire, no - need,

drowning in our own social feed.

Stop living for likes and live in the moment,

break yourself free from this digital torment.

We need to wean ourselves off of this drug.

We need to unplug.
