The sinking feeling when
I know how it will end
Lingers
Like toffee
Stuck hard in my throat
Sweetness overwhelms
Burning me to a shell
Hollow
Yet melting still
It follows me to gloat
Fingers tight on my ears
I pretend not to hear
Cloying
Attachment
Dripping around my neck
If I could find a key
I'd bury it in me
And twist
And tear it
Until the chains were wrecked
Sugar shards would fall
I'd be free from what all
My heart
Demanded
Not knowing it was blind
Beneath a sweet veneer
Glaze coating so dear
Vision
Distorted
Unable now to find
A handhold in glue
That toffee poured from you
Made sweet
To keep me
I won't be crystallized
