What does it truly mean to thrive?

I wouldn’t know, I’ve never tried.

All I’ve ever done with this gifted life of mine;

Is scrape and claw and try to survive.

Expectations were sky-high.

Yet all the time I was only trying to stay alive.

An endless series of tasks to distract my tortured mind.

Seeing everything but only knowing what was fine.

A steel trap, that’s what they call a mind like mine.

Everything goes in, every fact, and word, and line.

It’s the retrieval, the getting out, where the trap comes in.

Sometimes facts pour out of me, but my memories are all trapped in.

For me to stop surviving, and to try the thing called thriving there has to be some pain.

To wrest open a bear trap will never be an easy thing, but to save the leg inside is a noble cause worthy to attain.
