The Woman who Died
2020 PAD Challenge: Day 10
From Robert Lee Brewer's blog, Poetic Asides, "For today's prompt, write a The blank who blank poem."
The Woman who Died
The woman who died
suffered from diabetes for many years
before succumbing to Covid-19.
She resided in a care home.
The mother who died
raised three children on her own after her husband
went off to serve and didn’t come back, two boys
and a girl, and she put each one through university.
The woman who died loved her kids
and was loved deeply by them.
The grandma who died
had five grandchildren: Carolyn, James, Brendan, David,
and Cathy who was the baby, and each of them would tell you
Grandma made the best snickerdoodles when they were young, and
remember that time she made the gingerbread house at Christmas time?
That was the year she’d knitted stocking caps, scarves and mittens for everyone
and then stood out back to watch us slide while the turkey was roasting in the oven.
The woman who died, they’d all agree,
was the best grandma a kid could have had.
Shall I continue? Because,
each one who died
had a life.
