The Walk

A Man and His Dog

By Dan R FowlerPublished 8 days ago 1 min read

The Walk

I happened to see them again today,

The two who looked down as if they prayed.

It seemed a bit unusual I must say,

But I said nothing either they were okay.

I saw them set a pace easy to keep,

With thoughts and words, both held deep.

It was as if they didn’t see anyone around,

But kept their faces and eyes on the ground.

A car sped by but neither flinched,

But kept their positions with teeth clinched.

For they walked in silence unbeknownst to some,

As if the day was their last no more to come.

With determined footsteps, they marked their cadence,

Not attempting to please others or take a stance.

For them this walk, this shared time together remained,

A time of sharing of caring a special union proclaimed.

The old man now graying with eyes dimming,

Held fast to the leash with hands trembling.

For his friend had aged far faster than expected,

Walked and pawed and sniffed for things undetected.

I saw the man along the road again today,

He walked slower as if all hope had decayed.

A leash he didn’t hold but kept his face down,

As tears ripped his eyes and fell upon the ground.

His partner, his friend had stayed to the end,

A time destined for all something we can’t rescind.

But while the two walked their personal path,

It filled their lives with love a befitting epitaph.

Wow fascinating how you make something so simple deep.

  • I was moved by how you blend the physical act of walking with the exploration of inner thoughts and feelings. This duality creates a powerful narrative that is both relatable and thought-provoking. Your ability to find meaning in the mundane is a testament to your skill as a poet. Thank you for sharing such a reflective and inspiring piece. I look forward to reading more of your work.
