**
They taught her that the act of sex was natural.
They told her that masturbation was a normal occurrence; everyone had done it.
They tried to teach her their ways.
They tried to show her the "correct way".
There was only one teensy problem.. that same girl, the one they were trying to teach their skills to.. was only eight years old.
**
Eight.
She should've been playing with barbies.
She should've been going around her room, dancing to her favorite songs.
She should've been playing 'tea party' with her teddy bears and imaginary friends.
She was supposed to feel safe in her own home.
**
She wasn't supposed to be afraid of who was going to walk in through the door.
She wasn't supposed to be terrified to be around friends of the family.
She wasn't supposed to be hiding anything from the people at school, in fear that those people would get her parents in trouble.
**
They made a promise to her.
They promised her that they would never hurt her.
They promised to always keep her safe.
They called her their best friend.
Best friends aren't supposed to lie to each other.
**
"Don't tell your mom about this," They would always remind her.
"Of course your mom knows about this," They'd reassure her.
Lies.
Lies, lies, lies.
**
It's been fourteen years.
Fourteen years.
It took fourteen years for her to finally come clean to her mother.
Fourteen years, of her constantly telling herself that nothing happened.
Fourteen years, of her constantly having to remind herself that she would've avoided it all if she wasn't so stupid.
Fourteen years.
**
Now, she knows the real truth.
She knows it was never her fault.
She can't blame herself for the actions of the two adults who preferred the company of a child, rather than an adult.
Now, she hopes to be able to use her own personal past to help the young girls who might be going through the same situation that she was once in.
She can now fight for those girls; the ones who are afraid to speak up.. the ones who hide the truth to protect the adults that caused the harm..
She fights for them.
