The Reason Peter Pan Surrendered

And....The Rest Of The Story

It can be exhausting, can't it?

Maintaining the wiles of youth.

The voices in your head start to split,

masking your age, like a sleuth.

*

There were days that I'm sure, Peter felt it too,

keeping up with his childish ways.

Masking his fear, playing Hook for a fool,

coming up with new games they could play.

*

But at the end of the day, he still felt alone,

as his friends grew up and moved on.

There was nobody left, for his own,

like everyone else, they were gone.

*

Life was a task, he said, it's not any fun, anymore,

changing as fast as he ran, boldly keeping the score.

But the pace became burden, trouble to his soul,

being young all the time - began, taking its toll -

Leaving an unhealing hole, reeling out of control

he thought, please, someone tell me, because there has to be more!

*

So, when Wendy crossed his path, Peter never thought twice,

maybe settling down now, he thought, would be kinda nice.

She sure had the qualities, that most boys would like,

maybe, he smiled, she'd agree to becoming my wife.

*

And the story goes on, I think we've heard it before,

everything has a price, nothing is ever for sure.

But they did try their best, but then, after a while,

Peter wondered if he could go back, and he smiled...

*

Yes...revisit the past, a delayed, midlife crisis,

he bought a red corvette and aviator glasses.

And Wendy said, go, just know when you do,

I just may not be here, when your adventure is through.

*

And she cried as she watched the taillights in the dust,

raised her middle finger and said with disgust.

My mother was right, you just can't tame a boy,

who never really grew up and still plays with his toys.

    Excellent

  • Restless in childhood, finally anxious to become an adult, at which point we become restless again, longing for the freedom of our youth, only to discover that the toys & games never satisfy....
