The Pirate & The Mermaid

By: Adele Pena c2022

People say they didn't get along.

The Sirens were naughty with their alluring songs, and the Pirates were crude in manor.

Never was a love affair so bittersweet as this.

If a Pirate was seduced, death was in the mermaid's kiss.

If a mermaid was netted, both regretted, and neither came out unscathed.

Ravenous hearts long wandering, both roamed the ocean's currents,

searching for a different kind of satisfaction.

Adventurous souls in action.

One desiring riches for the takin', the other, gathering hearts forsaken.

Heave Ho! Don't get dragged below.

I would have to disagree with the history, of these two lovers of the sea.

For both were meant to roam wild and free.

Yet both were drawn toward the other and identified as potential lovers.

Their hearts both burnt with similar kindle and flame.

The two would make a perfect pair, but neither was willing to be tamed.

And so the stories are told in twisted tales,

as mermaids with broken hearts lost their roaming land-born mates.

And we all know there are many ways for a sailor to come across his fate.

Perhaps this is why mermaids are so evasive.
