The Labyrinth of Love

A retelling

In the kingdom of Crete, imprisoned in the ingenious maze of Daedalus,

Was the infamous Minotour, born out of Poseidon's curse.

And every year he devoured 7 of the bravest man,

And 7 of the fairest maiden,

Sent to Crete as tributes, as King Aegeus's Athens lacked the might,

But fate soon changed, as the hero Theseus emerged to put up the fight.

In he went to Crete, in disguise among the 7 of the bravest,

However, he caught the eyes of Princess Ariadne, the fairest.

Delved he deep into the labyrinth to slay the hybrid beast,

And the smitten Ariadne had to make sure her love returned at least.

So on the words of the Inventor, the princess put forth the threads,

That the hero may be guided back to the future that lay for the undead.

Words Theseus gave her that his love was true and honest,

That she would be the glistening jewel in his family's crest,

He wandered into the labyrinth and found the Minotour,

And ensued a battle worthy of many songs of the troubadour,

The half-human, half bull abomination ravaged on with his immense power

but it was Theseus with his bronze sword, carrying the head that devoured.

Returned the hero following the thread that love had borne him,

Yet it was the prince of Athens who broke his word it seemed,

And left the Ariadne at the island, her love broken beyond repair,

Taking her sister Phaedra instead, her heart full of despair.

Oft of an unrequited love bores the creation of our misery,

But for the fair princess, it bore the fruits of her history.

The mad god Dionysus fell in love, as honest as that emotion can be,

And took her from the island prison, for the whole world to see.

As for Theseus the hero, his actions bore him to the shore of his land,

But maybe the Gods disliked his conduct, and made amends,

That the black flag of death should take his Father's life,

Instead of the white flag to show for all he strived.

But one often imagines of what could have been,

If the love of Ariadne was accepted, as fate was to cease.
