Let the dog nod the grass, and tunnel for lost things he’d coddle

Let the dog sniff the ferns, and snuff a shrinking age

And when the walk ends, this dog must remain in the cage

In his youth a stout, loyal, sentinel

In this age his steps gone laden, and sight had seen brightly days

And so he wanders not, for in the kennel he remains

Let the dog stretch and yawn, and rub the gleaming grass

Let the dog run along on the path he and owner would pass

And when the walk ends, this dog remains in the cage

In his youth cheery and loyal

In this age his sight has gone weary, and his mind had known brightly days

And so he wanders not, for in the kennel he remains
