The Justified and The Righteous

Dialogue Poetry Challenge Entry.

By Paul StewartPublished 3 days ago 3 min read

Did you ever hear the tragedy of the man who sought wealth and status?

We all must eat and to live comfortably is a treat, why is that a fuss?

In his just pursuit for betterment, he did so at the sacrifice of others

If people put up walls to progress, they'll be destroyed, left in tatters

The progress of one does not outweigh the progress of many, would you agree?

Pains me to admit your argument is sound, but dismissing hard work, are we?

Hard work, no. Determination to attain great prominence despite the cost

Ah, now we're digging, isn't one responsible for what they have won, lost?

Oh, the words of the shrewd, selfish capitalist thou does speak, for shame for shame

Why do your liberal kind insist on repaying ambition and conviction with blame?

Blame, who is finger pointing and bemoaning differing opinions now? I speak only of reality

Oh, pour another glass and pour it on the poor helpless ambitionless scourge of society

Why the hatred? I can see it boiling over behind your eyes, as your veins do rise to the surface

The whining cries of the lesser of our supposed enlightened generation, ruin the human race

Ruin it, like the depleting rainforests, dredging oil out of existence and nuclear armament?

Your kind always bitch and moan about nuclear weapons, but never offer a reasonable argument

Reasonable argument - how about the skullfuck decision to overfund the armed forces?

Let me guess, you think the money would be better spent on the poor, the wretched and junkies?

Not just the poor, the so-called wretched and the junkies, fairer share for everyone!

Oh, what a world you live in, the fantasy realm of the naïve and charitable, what fun!

Why can't you argue your point without slinging dirt in the face of those who can't defend themselves?

is it any different what you do, with your arguments, your opinions? that sting with hatred to the haves?

The haves who share not with the have nots, but only with other haves, in their luxury habitation

The haves who didn't let obstacles deter them, who let nothing stand in their way, had steely determination

Steely determination is one thing, abject cruelty, either through faux ambivalence and obliviousness or deliberate acts of greed, though, is but another

Deliberate acts of greed... oh how my heart bleeds for the poor people who suffered because someone knew how to read and write and had their shit together

So now it's the victims of poverty who are to blame, not the one percent on their piles of cash like crooked, less funny Scrooge McDucks?

We all have to carry our own load and are all responsible for our own lot in life, it may not sound fair to you, but I don't give a …-

This is the problem, no-one is prepared to put their hands up and say sorry - to take responsibility - think of those less fortunate

Oh, why don't you go cry somewhere else with the smallest violin on the border of some war-torn disaster zone of misery, they'll reciprocate

Ignoring conflicts as per usual, if it doesn't affect your coffers, then why would it affect your conscience?

Bleeding hearts, bleeding minds, it's my money, my hard work and dedication, I didn't get rich by coincidence

Afraid to rock the boat, stick your neck out and take one for the losing team? Your lack of empathy makes me sick

pull my trigger like a Baldwin under stress, make pretty blood drain and stain ledgers, no excuse for being thick

questions are honeyed balm for the thinker, answers are solutions, salve we long to find, to clean the stain

No one has a problem with questions, as long as you are willing to accept the answers, regardless the pain

A debate that does not seem to be raging in the run up to the UK election...

  • Awesome poem, Paul. The disparity between the rich and the poor is obscene in my opinion and I love the back and forth of it here.

  • Oh wow, this is like the most Paulitical entry so far from you Sir Paul! So profound and a lot of food for thought! 🍩🥐

Wow, Paul! Those last few lines were amazing, as if the poet picked up where the dialectic ended. The poor have been despised and plundered throughout the ages. It is written, ‘For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and shall have in abundance; but from one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.’ Life is fundamentally unjust and unequal. And as your corporate scion in your poem made clear, the wealthy and powerful have no real motive to change any of that.

Nice! A debating dialogue poem! Props to you for delving into the political tangle and pulling out two strands to use in such a coherent progression of argument

Ahhh I want to love this because it's eloquent and skillful and the voices are distinct. But I have beef with oversimplifying politics 😏

  • I am wordless Paul! Well done.

Fact or fiction? It does sound like an actual conversation in parts, particularly with all the colloquial language which I enjoyed and made it come to life! And I did enjoy this line, “how about the skullfuck decision to overfund the armed forces?”
