The Heart Bleeds
Broken, bloody and bruised
The strength of each heartbeat
Echoes inside your head
Blood rushing furiously in defeat
Aching chest, fear and dread
Alone, always alone, now and forever
In silence the pain screams
Past and future, fight to sever
The thin thread of hope and dreams
Never belonging, an outcast
An alien to current society
Ironic, a truth to be held aghast
Scolded for notoriety
Sitting on the sidelines
Always watching from afar
Begging for the moon and stars to align
Receiving instead a jagged scar
Pondering on the universe
Disbelieving of the scorching pain
Lucky in love, a horrid curse
Leaving a bloody heart-print’s stain
Sliding beneath the covers
Never to venture throughout the years
Settling for a series of lovers
Love abhorrent of all other fears
Give in and give up
The pain always so severe
Time, the ongoing pick-me-up
When the end is near
The strength, the resilience
Astounding
In awe, mesmerising brilliance
Lesson after lesson compounding
Take pride
You persevered to the end
Heart scarred, eyes dried
You survived my friend

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
