Out in the golden haystacks
at midnight, summer comes ablaze,
when we fall nose to nose for the first time.
Your breath smells like peaches,
and I welcome you with open arms.
Then, like a cherry from a tree,
a star falls from heaven,
breaking my heart in two
as it hits the ground.
Then like fire spreading,
it multiplies a million times,
and my two pieces
break again,
and again,
and again,
crumbling to dust.
(That’s just the way the
cookie crumbles they say).
