The comfort of being you

They wore many hats

some like this

some like that

Their style changed every day

They spoke somewhat

about this

and of that

Reaching out to others through words

They cried a lot

over this

and for that

Their storms thundered inside their bones

But, with an open heart

full of this

and of that

They rejuvenated each day

To love completely

all of this

and, yes, that

Warmth cascaded from their smile

As they battled discreetly

against this

and, sadly, that

To be was their daily trial

Still, they dwelled on nothing

not this

no, not that

They judged from the core of their soul

And moved with ease

through this

across that

Over shifts of sands and time

Gifting themselves

to this

and to that

Setting their curious muse free

Forgiving themselves

For this

and for that

Appreciating the tricks life plays

And believed in themselves

through this

and in that

As they cradled their heart in their hand

Understanding themself

over this

and, yes, that

Embracing all that they can be

For they are change

no, not this

no, not that

And they will go on to be free

Dear Caroline Jane - I wanted to make a more personable reply to you here re; your comment on 'Sugar Daddy' - I see how you may have related in regard to Andy's can of 'Campbell' soup theory. Thank you for that. I have been following you forever, especially your lovely comments to others. But, I'm so far out of the popular-pond that I've stood back since I'm not into contests or rewards. Just a retired legal writer morphed into a VM Goof Writer, nothing more. *I've subscribed to you with pleasure as I'm scrolling through your gorgeous presentations approaching #100. You are a fabulously 'Original' artist/creator among so many "Creative" new-ways-to-write writer's among us. btw; Ms. Caroline - funny to me that others think I'm 'Shy' about 'what' to write; those have never read-me. - With Respect - Jay Jay Kantor, Chatsworth, California 'Senior' Vocal Author - Vocal Village Community -

I get all the this and that of life. The ups and downs and turn arounds. This was really brilliantly done. The nuances are subtle and on point.

This was really great! I loved the rhyme scheme, it felt whimsical. Something like Alice in wonderland meets Dr. Seuss.

What a beautiful, profound poem! I liked how many connotations, from playful to somber, you infused into 'this/that'. Congratulations!

    Love this.

  • Nice! Daring to repeat a line (or similar line) multiple times but it works nicely.
