Sunburn and Snow

i went up the bush a while back

and nearly forgot to come back

off the grid and out of the loop

and right away from the old beaten track

it gets below zero in the winter up here

and in summer it can hit forty or more

bare naked corrugated iron walls

and a cypress pine wood floor

no electricity, no running water

no mod cons (almost) of any kind

no cars no noise no neighbours

and that's how get my “don’t mind”

in spring and autumn i chop wood and tend gardens

in winter i plant bare rooted trees

summer will find me all suited up

and taking care of the bees

it’s cold and its honest

it’s hot and its hard

but the rest of Australia

is my back yard

no insulation to speak of

the walls and roof are corrugated tin

but it’s a work in progress

and everyday is new to begin

i use a generator at night

for the lights and and a smidge of tv

a cheap flat screen from Aldi

and a home theatre pc

four terabytes of pirated movies

for those nights spent inside

this is the place i run to

this is where i hide

twenty miles to the nearest town

won't be needing those headphones

a radiant heater sits proudly in the corner

to keep the winter chill away

summer finds me mostly outdoors

especially during the day

no reliable internet at all

hell i can barely get 3G

but i do have ALL the stars at night

as far as the eye can see

i have to drive about ten miles

if i want to go online

and even at the best spot

it drops out all the time

so

i open thirty odd tabs in my browser

and i load your latest bits

that way i can read them later on

where the internet doesn't exist

i can’t like and i can't comment

but read indeed, it has been

my heart is right here with you and vocal

even if i’ve not been seen
