Starbright

Should you ever gaze

at the silent stars above

and they begin to blink off

one by one by wondrous one,

do not be alarmed. Have no fear.

The twinkling light you perceive

has traveled far from the past

to reach you, to reach out to you,

from hundreds, even millions or billions,

of light-years away across an expanding universe.

For the stars to extinguish

light by lonely light as you watch

would require a meticulous coordination

of events on a cosmic scale

over all of eternity.

The gathering darkness would serve

only to confirm there is a God

and man is not only

the center of the universe,

but the focus of His abiding attention.
