star-crossed

poem

he lives in you like the words do

so he’ll never be forgotten

but you would breathe for him

and now your lips are blue

from when he kissed them hard enough to bruise

and you opened your mouth into it

because you craved the pain, you always do

you can’t keep your heart shut so you open your ribs

you’re kneeling in the middle of the street

holding your heart in your cupped hands

the ice-encrusted heart of a star

scintillating, shatterproof

you offer it up to him

and you hope it’s enough to last until spring.

this is the consequence of thawing.
