Silk Sheets

Silk Sheets

I miss delicious Sunday mornings with the curtains wide open,

sunshine and coffee on the rooftop and a book on my knee,

broken sunglasses I love too much to replace,

the promise of a quiet apartment inside

and silk sheets against bare legs,

watching tourists bump into each other on the street below

holding hands, laughing, moving in and out of tiny shops owned

by eager families, stores with fairy lights and open doors,

music touching the limestone.

I miss listening to crowds of students walk home

after the late-night showing of Bohemian Rhapsody

at the movie theatre that you have to walk through a convenience store

and up two flights of stairs to get to,

but it's ok because they only show the good movies

and it means singing Queen at 1 in the morning

on an empty city street while some stranger

waits by her window to hear the chorus.

I miss farmer's markets and lecture halls,

waterfronts and boba tea.

The little things about being young.

From a new window in an old town,

I watch a different street,

one that yawns in its lampless silence

humans pass like tumbleweeds.

There is no music

but there is something else here

I will one day miss.

A different song,

the haunting of a ghost town;

the silk sheet of memory.

"humans pass like tumbleweeds." This line is my fave! Your enchanted view from above emanates peace and love, ergo, I will place this story in my comment thread in the CREATION MYTH! Also, you've a new subscriber! (Me, that is, but I hope many more to come!)

This is beautiful, I love the imagery around humans passing like tumbleweed. I just left a big city for a quieter life and this is so sweetly nostalgic - thank you!

  • Not me thinking that you put a book on the floor, knelt down and placed your knee on it when you said book on my knee 🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣 I'm so sorry, there's something very wrong with me hahahahahaha. Anyway, your poem was so stunningly beautiful and I absolute loved it!

  • Wow that captured such a relatable feeling! That was so amazing and had that nostalgic sad feeling to it. I often think like that, missing times of the past, but your poem also serves as an excellent reminder that the moment you’re in right now could be one you’re missing later and to cherish the now. Loved this!

  • My lonely window overlooks a street that yawns in lampless silence, and I have not appreciated what I have been missing -- until reading your beautiful poem! This is beautifully written, Em!

I've never been a city lover, but you've sold it here.

Gorgeous and vivid, and then coming full circle with that metaphor at the end - brilliantly done πŸ‘
