If you got down on one knee

and told me you'd like to marry me I'd---

trade your forever

for never.

As shocking as it is for you

to know I don't choose you too,

this head of mine's not clever enough

to take us on a ride where I

control the gears.

Not that you'd allow it.

Though it's been years of that.

You expecting I follow your every move

like a master ventriloquist.

Though foolish I've been,

I hope you get the gist of this:

My safety is now deposited

in a box

you can't get to.

There's no combination you can try

to pry it open;

no amount of heat can scorch my resolve.

My fortune lies within walls of steel

as strong as the latent truths

that lie between your lips.

And if the quivering of your mouth slips

to reveal at once everything unspoken?

It would only serve to fortify

why I needed one

to begin with.
