Do you remember when we did not fear?
Limbs flailing in the wild sea's waves and sand,
Boldly daring the depths coating Earth's sphere.
We gloried beneath its pounding severe,
Our laughter piercing its roar, like command,
As bells ring above a storm, brave and clear.
Do you remember when we did not fear?
Dismissing such threats with curt wave of hand,
And proud swagger lest exploits disappear.
But with time the sea stripped our rash veneer.
Forsaking, led us to this shadowland,
Without loss causing wisdom to appear.
We forsook glory for safety severe,
And from watery pleasures did disband,
Strolling at water's edge but not too near.
Do you remember when we did not fear?
When youth's promise seemed like a wonderland.
Take my hand love and fair dreams reappear,
To splash in the waves as fear disappears.

this is fabulous - I remember no fear, but now...caution, caution. I liked this line: Dismissing such threats with curt wave of hand; and the last 2 lines resonate with me. 💕
I wish I can be carefree like that. It would be so blissful. Loved your wonderful poem!
This is a lovely and nostalgic piece! Definitely took me back to many summers at the beach with my cousins.
This is absolutely masterful! A genuinely enjoyable and thought-provoking read!
I love this, John. So wistful. But that can be regained, perhaps not with such gusto but you can dip your toe in?
Oh this is lovely! I wrote a 6-part series on Vocal about a girl who meets a Kelpie, and the last line went, "When we go running along the sand, dancing with the little waves and laughing, we know that we are going to live forever." You've expressed that so beautifully here 😁
This is amazing - is there someone in particular that inspired it in your life?
Grrr… my comment disappeared! Really like this poem, especially the opening… love the beach etc. Great artwork too!
wonderful piece of writing.
Love this, that joy we took in our vitality, and how it got battered and bashed to caution.
