Presumptuous

Why do adults talk like this?

When I was your age

I felt the same things

All that stuff is compounding

It hasn’t gone away

Even still I can’t help you

Only you know what to do

But if I was in your shoes

Here’s exactly what I’d say

All the moves and the plays

You won’t struggle like this

One day

But hey, maybe try to stay

Within the lines of fair play

With platters and trays

They serve with smiles so gay

And tell you with forked tongues

“It’s better this way

We’re trying to keep you safe”

Well hip hip hooray

You’ve saved the day!

And stolen my freedom

All the while

And what I’m supposed to say

Is “Yes, make me a slave”

All with the gaudiest happiest smile.
