Comforting Cookies
A late-night conversation
Boy:
“I’ve been thinking of you…”

Cookies:
“You have?”

Boy:
“Yes. I’ve been thinking of you all day. And all night too.”
————————————-
Cookies:
“Well, we’re honored to have been thought of by you.
Why exactly are we on your mind?”

Boy:
“Well, sometimes, in the middle of the night…
When I can’t sleep…
Or if I’ve had a bad dream and suffered a terrible fright…
I wake up and open the fridge, grab the milk and pour me a glass…
And pop a few cookies into my hand…
And before I know it, I’m happy and full and ready for bed, at last.”

Cookies:
“Ah.
So, we’re your late-night companions.”

Boy:
“Yes, indeed!
You make me happy and put my mind at ease.
Before I know it, I can’t even remember my bad dreams.”

Cookies:
“Well, we’re glad we can be there for you.”
————————————-
Boy:
“Sometimes I eat you by myself.
Sometimes I share you with others,
Like on Christmas Eve with Santa and his elves.
And sometimes Nana or Papa comes out,
And joins me at the kitchen table so I’m not alone.
You see, everyone loves cookies in this home.”

Cookies:
“Yeah, we get told that a lot.
We’re kind of everyone’s favorite thing.”

Boy:
“You really are to me.
I often wonder, ‘What would I eat at midnight, if it were not for delicious biscuits?
Perhaps raisins or rice cakes or carrot slices or celery sticks?’
That’s no way to live!”

Cookies:
“We agree.
Vegetables and healthy foods can’t compete with our sugary goodness.”
————————————-
Boy:
“The only sad thing is when the cookie jar is empty and there’s nothing left inside.
And we all must go to bed
And back to sleep until next time.”

Cookies:
“Well…we’ll always be there for ya.
We’ll always have your back.”
————————————-
Boy:
“I know you will be, my little cookie friends.
I can always count on my favorite snack.”
