Poppies by the bridge

#Abecedarian Challenge

an icicle the length of her arm hangs just

beneath her feet, a frozen dagger

clinging to the cold metal edge,

daring her slim form to move or perhaps

explain, but she owes it nothing.

feathered foragers gather below to

gape and glare at her foolishness on display, but they

have no place

in her tormented mind; they

jest and tease, unable to comprehend, to

know the pain she holds within,

like all the others she'll leave behind.

meaningless days bleed into waking

nightmares fueled by an

opium high. oh that sweet

poppy, with its delicate fringe,

quietly stealing her life away.

realization is wasted though, she's not

strong enough to stay sober;

too much of a coward to step off into the

unknown. but what's to know? she'd

vanish and only the birds under the bridge

would bear witness; her sallow,

xanthic skin stretched too thin,

yearning for a warmth that never comes...

zion is too far away.

Oh, so hard to read, but impossible to stop! "Well done" doesn't quite cover it.

I found this heavy, intense, morose and teasing; you really are exceptional. 1000 stars and a gazillion points; I hit the buzzer and lots of prosperity is falling from the skies in whatever form you wish. The WINNER takes it all!

  • This was so poignantly beautiful and evocative! Loved your poem my fear friend!

    Exquisitely written!!! Heather, love it!!!💕❤️❤️

  • Achingly beautiful. You know that I feel this one deeply, not for the fruit of the poppy but for the cowardly & helplessly hopeless longing.

Profound writing here! Heroin stole my beautiful Jade's life. But she reached Zion, so now she doesn't feel the cold of this world's winter anymore.
