We pay for existence

With the watches on our wrists

We live to exist

We exist to live

And now more than ever

the latter

Means more than it did

It has been a struggle

a constant knot

While surrounded by beautiful things

To remind myself

I have not forgot

And while the guilt feels heavy

The responsibilities weigh more

I’m constantly waiting

For someone to show me a door

And I would exit the back

wave goodbye to my friends

But we all have our troubles

So who am I to pretend

My struggles substantial to theirs

So I shame myself for having these thoughts

And I should not compare

To what I have

what I have not

Does anyone care?

we give our time in exchange

For something not even there

A promise of a future, with

Wages that were suppose to buy time

But when we reach for our wallets

We are so shocked to find

We paid for existence

With the watches on our wrists

We packed our schedules

Until they were full to the brim

We lived to exist

We existed to live

To them, it never mattered

The order,

In which they were switched .
