One Valuable Epiphany
An opening of a heart
In answer to an exciting poetry prompt,
Of a memorable moment I experienced,
An event that broadened my perspective,
Happened only last night,
An eye opening night of theatre.
***
I sat in stunned silence,
As I finally got to see ‘Phantom of the Opera’,
Live in a magical theatre production,
After only ever hearing the beautiful lyrics of the songs,
I now have a better understanding of the story line.
***
The prompt asks if it assisted me in improving myself,
And I’d like to think I can honestly answer with a yes,
The story line hit my heart, no actually make that my soul,
As the devastation and destruction,
The cruelty that shouldn’t belong in our world.
***
My heart broke time and time again in those few hours,
An epiphany of how we judge others unfairly,
He didn’t ask for that scarred face,
Or the way society cast him aside,
Causing him to hide in terrible pain.
***
The feelings of emotional heartbreak he felt,
The betrayal of society,
Judging a book by its cover,
With very little facts,
Tore his whole world apart.
***
I’ll endeavour to learn and remember the valuable lessons,
This production caused a profound ache inside,
I’ll attempt to love more, judge less,
Become the change that life needs,
To accept those less fortunate than me.
***
Those dear souls with a heart full of emotional pain,
A head full of rehearsed barbed comments they’ve heard,
The hidden heartbreak they hide behind a beautiful smile,
Not trusting another soul for years to come,
Broken, bent and bloody, through no fault of their own.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I feel the same way when watching phantom! A good play! Well written! Really enjoyed!!
I've read Phantom of the Opera and it was just so sad. The worst thing humans can do is judge others. Loved your poem my friend
Oh, you captured the sad truth of the phantom and the way he was treated. I saw this on a high school trip and was just blown away. It's stayed with me ever since. So glad you got to see it! Great piece :)
Beautiful piece. I remember seeing Phantom years ago, and loved it wholeheartedly. Very well done.
