Retreat. A Steel Pier thrusts out towards sunrise
Smiley beached whale-like women
sunning
City of Dreams, a poet's paradise.
Land of merriment & tall regal
hotels.
We are here, parodible.
Stranded drunkards.
Beneath the boardwalk rumbles.
Monsters below, the homeless
Shattered & withdrawn
Cute rate rent
Crazed zombies
Collecting change
The bored-walk.
Oh Tilly!
God of Amusement
Where have you gone?
Leaving us nothing but postcards
from those who've entered
your Kingdom
Sea of Light
burning bright
into the night skies
Just a grain of sand
in the universal memory
Where is the laughter
the joy
and merriment
Where are the dreams
the screams
of excitement
What has become of you
and your fanciful style
What has become of
your beautiful smile

"Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities." - Jim Morrison
These poems are from my book An American Parody, which is a tribute to the writings and poetry of Jim Morrison.
