Oh, safety pins big and small,

simple plain helpful for all.

On the go a skirt seam breaks

safety pins are what it takes.

A must in your first aid kit

for bandages to close and fit.

Static clings at the wrong time

stick on hem won't be a crime.

Safety pin socks in pairs

avoid laundry lost sock scares.

When you have them it's a win.

Don't be without a safety pin.

'The Prompt

Write an ode to an ordinary object.

At the beginning of the year, we hosted the Uncommon Poetry Challenge. Now, it's time to embrace the opposite: the ordinary. This poetry challenge prompts you to pause and appreciate the unsung heroes that add value to your daily life — to find beauty in the most mundane. From the reliable old toaster that browns your bread each morning, to the humble pen that captures your thoughts, or the warped key that opens your home - we invite you to bring these everyday items to life in verse.

An ode is a form of lyrical poetry traditionally used for expressions of praise. It's about shifting perspectives, unearthing depth and complexity in the simplest of things. Entries can range from humorous to sentimental, abstract to concrete, as long as they embody the spirit of celebrating the ordinary."

Writer's notes: My Ode to safety pins is on the utility of the large or small safety pins. There are so many ways that a metal safety pin can be used. As for the simple safety pin, keep it handy. Thank you!

I've never thought to use a safety pin to secure pairs of socks when washing! A sock without its pair is the bane of my laundering existence. Love this!

Never knew about the sock trick. I have many safety pins too. Learned something new due to a tiny pin. Brava Babs,

This is cute! ❤️ Good job ❤️

  • And will you pin this quite safely to the top of your profile page as one of your three? Seriously, there are few objects with greater utility or more deserving of such an ode. Well done.
